CBO: American Health Care Act Will Lower Premiums, Reduce Deficit

‘The takeaway from today’s announcement is clear: the Congressional Budget Office agrees that the American Health Care Act will ultimately lower premiums and increase access to care. This legislation is the first part of a three-pronged repeal-and-replace plan. It will bring relief to families and small-businesses, give Americans more control over their own health choices, and help stabilize the marketplace.’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement regarding the American Health Care Act’s Congressional Budget Office score:

“Obamacare is a failed law that is hurting the middle class. Maintaining the current Obamacare status quo is not an option. That is why voters wanted change this election and tasked Republicans in Congress and President Trump to repeal and replace this failed law.

“The takeaway from today’s announcement is clear: the Congressional Budget Office agrees that the American Health Care Act will ultimately lower premiums and increase access to care. This legislation is the first part of a three-pronged repeal-and-replace plan. It will bring relief to families and small-businesses, give Americans more control over their own health choices, and help stabilize the marketplace. Additionally, as the CBO also pointed out today, it will significantly reduce taxes on families and health care consumers. This legislation also contains major entitlement reform — the most significant entitlement reform in a generation — which will not only save money in the short-term, but also lower long-term costs and reduce the national debt.

“This good news actually gets better, as today’s incomplete report only considers one piece of our three-prong approach. It does not take into account prong two, executive actions the administration has and will continue to take to stabilize health markets and lower costs. It does not account for prong three, future legislative action.  And because this CBO report paints only a third of the picture, its statistics on coverage are obviously premature. Obamacare tried to force every American into the ‘insured’ column and failed. Our aim is to give Americans lower cost and greater choice so they can actually pick the coverage that’s right for them – without a threat from the IRS.

“Obamacare is a direct attack on the middle class. It raised costs. It crushed choice. It will continue to get worse unless we act to repeal and replace it.  We’re determined to keep our promise to the American people to do so.”
