The Moment of Truth: Do Democrats Support Voter ID or Not?
If Democrats Vote the Way They Talk, There Will Be Enough Votes to Make Voter ID the Law of the Land
DEMOCRATS SAY THEY SUPPORT VOTER ID
“I suspect that Democrats are not eager to be seen as on the 20 percent side of an 80-20 issue. So they’re trying to have their cake and eat it too. And so the Democrat leader is out there claiming Democrats support voter ID … as long, of course, as he doesn’t have to vote for any ID proposal that we actually put forward.” – Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.)
- After years of Democrats calling voter ID an instrument of voter suppression, Senate Democrats now say they are on board with commonsense voter ID requirements:
- “Democrats support voter ID.” – Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) (3/15/26)
- “… our objection, as Democrats, is not to a photo ID.” – Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) (3/17/26)
- “They say it's show a voter ID. I'm not opposed to that. They ask you for an ID at the airport, don't they? That's reasonable.” – Senate Democrat Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) (3/13/26)
- KAITLAN COLLINS: “If there was just a clean vote on voter ID, specifically, is that something you would support?”
SEN. CORY BOOKER (D-N.J.): “Yes. And New Jersey has voter ID laws. I got to show my driver's license.” (CNN: The Source – 3/24/26)
- “Who could be against that, requiring ID to vote?” – Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) (3/24/26)
- “I think you should have to prove that you are who you say you are before you vote. I support voter ID.” – Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) (3/23/26)
- “… voter ID, which hopefully all Americans are in agreement about…” – Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) (3/19/26)
- “The IDs that we have in our wallets should be good enough to vote. They always have been.” – Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) (3/19/26)
- “Well, the voter ID part is probably fine. We have voter ID here in Rhode Island.” – Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) (3/20/26)
- “If people want to adopt the Arizona way, which is strict voter ID, I think that would be fine.” – Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) (3/20/26)
- “We support reasonable steps that help maintain trust in our elections, including the voter identification requirements we already have in Virginia.” – Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine (D-Va.) (3/17/26)
- “If the bill simply required every American to show an ID at the polls, then I would not be ringing such a loud alarm.” – Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) (3/21/26)
- “83% of Americans agree on voter ID. 71% of Democrats agree on voter ID. Keep it basic: PHOTO ID to vote… If the GOP wants real reform over a show vote––put out a clean, standalone bill and I’m AYE.” – Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) (3/17/26)
- Democrats’ newfound support for voter ID notwithstanding, Leader Schumer continues to peddle misinformation about Republicans’ clean voter ID amendment:
- Leader Schumer said on the Senate floor that Sen. Jon Husted’s (R-Ohio) amendment “would block student, veteran, and other State and Federal IDs.”
- “Can you imagine? You can’t use your—under this amendment, you can’t use your veteran ID, after you served the country and you want to come back and vote…” – Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)
- In reality, Republicans’ commonsense voter ID amendment specifically includes veteran IDs issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs: “For purposes of this section, the term `valid military identification' means any photo identification card issued by the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs.” (U.S. Congress: S.Amdt.4732 to S.Amdt.4420 – accessed 3/26/26)
TODAY, DEMOCRATS WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO PUT THEIR MONEY WHERE THEIR MOUTH IS AND SUPPORT A CLEAN VOTER ID PROVISION
“11 states represented by Democrat senators already require some form of ID to vote. My amendment builds on the voter ID work in those states—a straightforward, clean bill requiring photo ID at the polls. More than 80% of Americans support showing photo ID when voting. I hope Senate Democrats will join us and help secure our elections.” – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio)
- Today the Senate will vote on Sen. Jon Husted’s (R-Ohio) amendment to the SAVE America Act, a simple up-or-down vote on commonsense photo ID requirements to vote. (U.S. Congress: S.Amdt.4732 to S.Amdt.4420 – accessed 3/26/26)
- Acceptable forms of voter ID under Sen. Husted’s amendment are:
- Unexpired driver’s license with a photo
- Unexpired state-issued ID card with a photo
- Valid passport
- Valid military or veteran ID with a photo
- Unexpired tribal ID with a photo (U.S. Congress: S.Amdt.4732 to S.Amdt.4420 – accessed 3/26/26)
- “Thirty-six states have laws requesting or requiring voters to show some form of identification at the polls.” (National Conference of State Legislatures: Voter ID Laws – 7/2/25)
- “The idea of showing photo ID to vote gets support across party lines:”
