Leader McConnell Statement on Senator Pat Roberts

‘For the better part of four decades, Congress, the people of Kansas, and farming communities across America have all benefited from the selfless service and distinguished leadership of Senator Pat Roberts. I am sorry to learn today that he will be leaving the Senate at the end of next year.’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement regarding Senator Pat Roberts’ announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2020:

“For the better part of four decades, Congress, the people of Kansas, and farming communities across America have all benefited from the selfless service and distinguished leadership of Senator Pat Roberts. I am sorry to learn today that he will be leaving the Senate at the end of next year.

“When Pat joined this body in 1997, he was already known as a tireless advocate for America’s farmers. On this side of the Capitol, where he became the first person in American history to chair the Agriculture Committees in both the House and the Senate, my colleagues and I have seen his prolific work up close. He led the charge on passing comprehensive legislation to give agricultural communities the certainty they need, notching big victories as recently as just last year.

“Tirelessness and effectiveness have defined Pat Roberts’s other important work, as well -- from his years leading the Intelligence Committee to this proud Marine’s advocacy for his fellow veterans and those currently serving in uniform. The Senate will miss the senior Senator from Kansas. But we’re glad his departure is two years away. My colleagues and I are happy to be entering the 116th Congress with Pat Roberts still on the field.”
