WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) today spoke at the White House with President Trump:

Thune’s remarks below (as delivered):

“Thank you, sir.

“Well, Mr. President, thank you for having us.

“This is the fourth week of the Democrat shutdown, but we are all here today because your Republican team in the Senate is unified.

“This is now the longest full shutdown in history.

“But everybody here has voted now 11 different times to open up the government.

“And we are going to keep voting to open up the government.

“And eventually, the Democrats – hopefully, sooner or later – are going to come around.

“But Mr. President, your agenda is the right one for this country.

“This is your team.

“We are your partners in achieving and implementing the agenda that you campaigned on and the American people voted for.

“And you just mentioned, it has been a series of promises made and promises kept.

“Whether it’s national security, whether it’s the border, whether it’s the economy, taxes, regulations, energy, Trump newborn accounts, school choice.

“You look at what we’ve accomplished so far, it is a remarkable, remarkable team and a record of accomplishment that can’t be matched – and I would argue, at least in my time here, but perhaps in all of history.

“So thank you for your leadership, and we will continue to be good partners and work with you to get the work done for the American people.

“And let’s hope that the Democrats get wise, and starting perhaps even today, vote to reopen the government so we can get back to work for the American people.

“Mr. President, thank you for having us at your home. You have beautiful homes.

“And thank you for everything you’re doing to make this such a beautiful place.

“This is America’s house. We’re delighted to be here. Thank you.”
