Senate To Vote On Protecting Innocent Life

Senators Will Have The Opportunity To Vote On The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act And ‘Protect Infants Who Survive Abortions’

SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH McCONNELL (R-KY): “Caring for innocent children and their mothers is a moral imperative. To put these principles into action, I announced, as Senate Majority Leader, that we would vote on the ‘Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,’ offered by Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) in the coming days. His bill, on which I’m proud to be an original cosponsor with … my colleagues, would direct any physician present when a baby survives an abortion to provide medical assistance the same way they would for any other child who is born alive at that stage. In short, it requires that doctors treat these babies with the attention and care they deserve.” (Sen. McConnell, Op-Ed, “Bill To Protect Abortion Survivors Should Not Be Partisan Issue,” Kentucky Today, 2/21/2019)

SEN. BEN SASSE (R-NE): “I want to thank the Majority Leader for scheduling this vote so that every American can know where their Senator stands … A lot of Senators spend a lot of time telling people how they fight for the little guy. Well, here’s the chance for them to prove it. We’re going to have a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and everyone is going to have to put their name by their vote…. It shouldn’t be hard to protect newborn babies – let’s pass this legislation.” (Sen. Sasse, Press Release, 2/14/2019)

  • SEN. SASSE: “Every member of the Senate is going to have to answer … The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act should be the easiest vote any Senator takes.” (Washington Free Beacon, 2/22/2019)

HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER KEVIN McCARTHY (R-CA): “Without laws requiring mandatory medical care, there are few, if any, meaningful protections for newborns. In the face of this horrifying potential, Congress should pass the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which passed the House last Congress with 241 votes … Republicans in Congress have asked to move this legislation forward every single day the House has been in session since February 6th, and Democrats have blocked the vote each time. Protecting innocent life should not be a partisan issue and it should not be difficult.” (Rep. McCarthy, Press Release, 2/21/2019)

The Senate Will Vote On The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, Which Would ‘Protect Infants Who Survive Abortions’

“On Monday, the U.S. Senate will vote on a bill that will protect infants who survive abortions … Sen. Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) pushed for a roll call vote, in which he and his colleagues will have to attach their name and voice to a life-and-death issue…. The bill, called the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, will ensure that doctors provide life-saving care to any baby that survives an abortion.” (Washington Free Beacon, 2/22/2019)

‘This Bill Should Not Be The Least Bit Controversial’

“This bill does not impose restrictions on abortion and is not a way to prosecute women who have Abortions … The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act guarantees that if a child of an attempted abortion is born alive, he or she will receive the medical care that would otherwise occur if the child was born at that gestation under normal circumstances. This bill places sole responsibility on the medical provider to not simply let the child starve, suffocate, or die of other means, but to fulfill his or her oath to do no harm…. This bill should not be the least bit controversial, but unfortunately, in the light of disturbing comments made recently by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, it is absolutely necessary.” (Penny Nance, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee CEO, Letter to senators, 2/21/2019)

  • “The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act builds on the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act of 2002, which clarified as a matter of federal law that ‘every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development’ is a ‘person’ for all federal law purposes. The 2002 law made explicit that this status applies irrespective of the manner in which the child was born alive, including via an attempted induced abortion. It was passed by unanimous consent in the Senate. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is designed to further clarify the duty of care owed to infants born alive during an attempted abortion. If born alive as a result of an abortion or attempted abortion, the child must be administered reasonable care and transported immediately to a hospital.” (Susan B. Anthony List, Press Release, 2/04/2019)

Yet Democrats In The House And Senate Objected To Quickly Passing This Legislation

“Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse sought unanimous consent to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act … However, Washington Democratic Sen. Patty Murray objected to Sasse's bill, saying the legislation was unnecessary and amounted to a political stunt.” (“Senate Dems Block Bill To Protect Abortion Survivors, Calling It A GOP Stunt,” Fox News, 2/04/2019)

“Every day since Trump’s State of the Union speech, House Republicans have unsuccessfully sought unanimous consent for a bill that would require medical care for babies who survive attempted abortions.” (“‘It Woke A Sleeping Giant’: Republicans Challenge Democrats Over N.Y. Abortion Law, Northam’s Comments,” The Washington Post, 2/07/2019)

‘It Is Time For Politicians, Regardless Of Party, To Stand Up In Favor Of Protecting Innocent Life’

National Right to Life: “The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) today thanked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for scheduling a Senate vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S. 311). A vote on the bill, which is being sponsored by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), is expected on February 25, 2019.  If enacted, the bill would extend federal legal protection to babies who are born alive during an abortion.” (National Right to Life, Press Release, 2/14/2019)

SBA List President MARJORIE DANNENFELSER: We urge the Senate to bring the bill to the floor for a recorded vote so Americans can know where each senator stands, and we urge its passage. It’s time to get this bill swiftly to the President’s desk for his signature.” (Susan B. Anthony List, Press Release, 2/04/2019)

March for Life Action President TOM McCLUSKY: “We ask Congress to heed President Trump’s call to pass legislation prohibiting late-term abortion as well for a quick floor vote in the Senate on the Born-Alive bill … It is time for politicians, regardless of party, to stand up in favor of protecting innocent life.” (March for Life, Press Release, 2/06/2019)

Concerned Women For America CEO PENNY NANCE: “On behalf of our supporters and activists nationwide, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) expresses its strong support for S. 311, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act…. When the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act was brought before Congress in 2002, there was no dissent. We urge you to vote in favor of this legislation …” (Penny Nance, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee CEO, Letter to senators, 2/21/2019)
