McConnell Comments on the Passing of James Buckley

LOUISVILLE, KY – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued the following statement today regarding the passing of Jim Buckley:

“I was saddened to learn of the passing of James Buckley, a remarkable American who lived an extraordinarily consequential life.

“The sheer breadth of Jim’s involvement in our nation’s public life was a singular accomplishment — from the Senate to the State Department to the federal bench. But history will most remember him for the depth of his contributions to Constitutional jurisprudence and his vigorous advocacy for First Amendment freedoms.

“Jim’s efforts in Buckley v. Valeo laid an historic foundation for generations of political speech and helped shape my own views on that topic.

“Today, I offer my sincere condolences to Jim’s family and join them in honoring his life’s essential work.”
