On Iran ‘We Need Robust Debate’

Dem Leadership: Robust Floor Debate ‘Is Part Of The History Of The Senate, It’s One Of The Strengths Of The Senate’

Sen. Reid: ‘There Should Be Amendments Offered’

SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV): ‘There should be amendments offered… We need robust debate’ “I look forward to returning to the debate on the situation dealing with Iran.  … We are going to move to this bill as soon as we can. I hope we can do it sooner rather than later.  The debate on these amendments that the Republican leader talked about are very significant. As the Republican leader said, there should be amendments offered. If people think they can improve the bill, there can be amendments offered. If people think there is stuff in the bill they simply don't like and they don't like all of this process, let them offer an amendment. We need robust debate.” (Sen. Reid, Congressional Record, S.2362, 4/23/15)

SEN. BOB MENENDEZ (D-NJ): “‘We need to return to regular order,’ [Sen. McConnell] said. I agree with him. Let’s do it. Let’s return to regular order… [regarding] of our effort to establish congressional oversight of any nuclear agreement with Iran.” (Sen. Menendez, Congressional Record, S.1259, 3/3/15)

Dems ‘Grateful … To Go Back To Regular Order,’ ‘This Is The Way We Should Be Working’

SEN. DICK DURBIN (D-IL): “I happen to support this notion of more floor deliberation, more floor debate. I think that is part of the history of the Senate, it’s one of the strengths of the Senate... So, I think there’s a healthy, bipartisan attitude toward more floor debate and what it leads to is more compromise and more achievement.” (AgriPulse’s “Open Mic,” Minute 1:15, 4/19/15)

  • DURBIN: “I think that we are in a healthy environment on the floor of the Senate where we are pursuing amendments and active debate, and it is great to see that happening… I commend not only the leadership on the majority side but I commend my colleagues too.” (Sen. Durbin, Floor Remarks, 1/22/15)

SEN. HEIDI HEITKAMP (D-ND): “I am grateful for the opportunity to go back to regular order. I am grateful for the opportunity to talk about amendments.” (Sen. Heitkamp, Congressional Record, S.45, 1/7/15)

SEN. CHRIS COONS (D-DE): “I am grateful that we continue to have an open amendment process and the opportunity to discuss and debate the issues in front of us…” (Sen. Coons, Congressional Record, S.526, 1/27/15)

SEN. JOE MANCHIN (D-WV): “I am very excited about the process, the open amendment process. … This presents an incredibly valuable opportunity to accomplish some of our Democratic priorities...” (Sen. Manchin, Congressional Record, S.162, 1/13/15)

SEN. TOM UDALL (D-NM): “Mr. President, let me just say to the two leaders on the floor who have participated in this open amendment process that I really appreciate the way Chairwoman Murkowski and Ranking Member Cantwell have worked through this bill. I really appreciate all their help. I have heard, at least on our side of the aisle, over and over that this is the way the Senate should be moving, this is the way we should be working. So I think all of us are very appreciative of how the two managers of the bill have worked together. I thank my colleagues…” (Sen. Udall, Congressional Record, S.575, 1/28/15)

SEN. MARIA CANTWELL (D-WA): “I, too, want to talk for a few minutes about what an incredible process it’s been… I think this process that we just went through bodes well for us trying to say to both sides of our aisles that listen there are things we can put on the table and discuss in a process we can go through and that process can work.” (Sen. Cantwell, Floor Remarks, 1/29/15)
